BAFTAs 2016 Overview
The 69th British Academy Film Awards (BAFTAs) were held yesterday at the Royal Opera House in London.
Stephen Fry, once again, was the evening’s main host. He deleted his twitter account after receiving lots of criticism on Twitter for making fun of the costume designer Jenny Beavan, who won the costume award for Mad Max: Fury Road, saying her outfit made her look like a ‘bag lady’. But despite what people thought, he was not just being mean, turns out him and Jenny Beavan are good friends, and she got the joke.
While everyone is wondering whether Leonardo DiCaprio finally gets an Oscar this year, he won his first ever Bafta for the best actor in the Revenant. The movie also got the best film, best director, alongside best sound and best cinematography awards. With the exception of last year’s Boyhood, for the past seven years the best film winner chosen by Bafta voters has gone on to win an Academy Award. Let’s see if it happens this year!
Each time Kate and Leo are in the same place together, everyone has a bit of a moment and this Baftas were not different. Both Titanic actors won the awards and as Kate Winslet was on her way to get hers for the best supporting actress in Steve Jobs, cameras captured her squeezing Leonardo DiCaprio’s hand on her way past. Our hearts melted!
There were some unfortunate events last night as well. An English actress and writer Julie Walters revealed that she’d lost one of her extremely expensive diamond earrings at the ceremony, which made her worried since the earrings were borrowed, and, as she confessed, were probably the same price as her house!
But enough gossip. The most spectacular part of the BAFTAs was, of course, the red carpet! Cate Blanchett wowed the press with a stunning ornate embroidered McQueen gown. Alicia Vikander was wearing a leather dress with metal links, which apparently weighed 35lbs! Dakota Johnson chose figure-skimming red ruffled gown. Red was one of the trendiest colours of the night! Dree Hemingway, Emilia Clarke, Hannah Bagshawe – all of them were seen in different styles of red dresses.
If you are looking for your own red carpet dress, you can easily find it here!
